Acid Reflux in Cats

Acid reflux disease is not something only humans have to worry about—cats can suffer from this painful disorder as well. Here, a Reynoldsburg veterinarian discusses the cause, symptoms, and treatment for your cat’s acid reflux.

Cause

Acid reflux occurs when gastric fluids re-enter the esophagus from the stomach, causing inflammation of the esophagus due to the acid and other gastrointestinal fluids coming in contact with it. Acid reflux is a relatively common affliction for cats, and it may occur for a variety of reasons. If your cat has recently undergone anesthesia, the muscle opening between the stomach and esophagus may have relaxed. Improper positioning and recovery from anesthesia could lead to acid reflux.

Chronic vomiting and hernias are other possible causes of acid reflux. Ask your veterinarian what is causing your cat’s health concern.

Symptoms

Your cat will probably exhibit signs of pain, such as howling or excessive meowing. A loss of appetite and weight loss may occur because your cat doesn’t want to eat due to pain. Sometimes, cats may vomit or spit up food.

Treatment

Set up an appointment to visit your veterinarian’s office as soon as you notice the above symptoms. Your vet will most likely perform an esophagoscopy to view the inside of your cat’s esophagus. Medications and a change in diet will probably be prescribed. These medicines will strengthen the muscle between the throat and stomach, and improve the movement of stomach contents. A change in diet will help as well by limiting excess fat and protein, which can contribute to the disease.

Once your cat is treated by your Reynoldsburg vet, keep an eye on him at home for relapses and signs of discomfort. Keep your cat on a low-fat diet to help prevent acid reflux, and call your veterinarian if you think the initial treatment isn’t showing results.
