5 Tips to Help Your Pet Beat the Summer Heat

The whole family can enjoy the summer, but with temperatures rising faster than ever, it's crucial to take some precautions to protect your pets. When your pets go outside for some summer activities, keep these suggestions in mind!

1. Maintain Water Availability

Dehydration can be a risk for dogs during summer days. To ensure your pet stays hydrated, it's important to have water readily available when you're together. It's a good idea to carry a water container or bring along some bottles of water.

2. Permit Your Pets To Retain Their Fur

Dog breeds with thick, long coats, such as Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, and Golden Retrievers, are very common. However, you should never shave them during summer. Their undercoat preserves their skin at the same temperature as their optimal body temperature by trapping air around it. Additionally, their fur shields them from sunburn.

3. Protect Them From the Sun Rays

Short-haired or light-colored canines are usually more prone to sunburn. Applying dog-friendly sunscreen to the areas of their body where their fur is shortest and their skin is most exposed can help protect them and avoid heatstroke. It is a good idea to apply sunscreen most frequently above the nose, on the belly, and in the groin area.

4. Do Not Leave Your Pet In a Car

We all agree that taking your dog along for the ride makes any journey more fun and enjoyable. However, you should never leave them alone in the vehicle. Temperatures inside a vehicle can quickly increase to deadly levels, even with a window cracked.

5. Watch out for hot pavement

In the summer, it can be alluring to take your dog for a stroll or to outdoor activities, but it's crucial to consider how hot the pavement will be. You may consider buying special booties for your dog to protect their paws. A doggy life vest should always be carried while visiting a body of water, and your pet should always wear it while swimming.
