Choosing Cat Furniture

Does your kitty have some things of her own to play on and look smug about? If so, that’s great! Fluffy has never been shy about ‘borrowing’ our beds, couches, and chairs, but she really benefits from having things made just to suit her. There are some things to keep in mind when shopping for your cat, however. Below, a Pickerington, OH vet discusses choosing cat furniture.

Nervous Kitties

Just like people, cats all have their own purrsonalities: while some are bold and fearless, others are very timid. If you have a scaredy-cat, choose pieces that offer your kitty places to hide, like pet tents or tipis, or cat towers with enclosed levels.

Senior Cats

As Fluffy ages, she may have trouble jumping and climbing to higher spots. Choose pieces that incorporate steps, with the lowest level close to the floor. Your furry pal may also appreciate having a comfy window seat or lounging spot before a window with a good view.

Frisky Pets

Do you have a furry bundle of mischief on your hands? Kitties can be very playful, especially when they are young. Get your frisky furball a fun activity center that incorporates lots of toys. Fluffy may also appreciate having some cat tunnels, so she can hide there and ‘ambush’ you by dashing out in front of you as you walk by.

Multiple Felines

If you have more than one cat, you’ll want to opt for pieces that can fit all of your feline friends at once. Otherwise, your kitties may argue over whose turn it is to use it. (Note: if you have a multi-level cat tower, the feline that gets the top spot is probably the boss cat.)

All Cats

No matter what type of kitty you have, a comfy bed is a safe bet. Cats just can’t have too many napping spots! Hammocks are also a good choice. Fluffy may also be thrilled with a simple cardboard box.

Tips

If you want to save money, or just like making things, go the DIY route. For instance, you can easily turn an old stepladder into a cat tower. First, just add smooth boards to the steps to widen them out. Then, wrap the whole thing in carpet or sisal rope. Voila! Look online for more great ideas.
