Thanksgiving With Fluffy

Do you have a kitty? If so, your feline pal will no doubt be underfoot as you start making your Thanksgiving preparations. Cats are definitely something to be thankful for! They’re also a bit prone to mischief, so you may want to take a few precautions to keep your furball safe and purring through the autumn holiday. Read on as a Pickerington, OH vet discusses Thanksgiving with Fluffy.

Guests

Do some of your visitors have allergies? If so, Fluffy will probably head straight for the person who is allergic to cats or likes cats the least. To reduce the amount of dust and dander in your home, vacuum and dust thoroughly, and change your air filters. Brushing your kitty will also help. You may want to set out some tissue and over-the-counter medications as well.

Scaredy-Cats

While some kitties are very sociable, and will spend the day making friends with your guests and getting ear scritches, others are quite nervous. If your cat tends to get anxious when you have visitors, put Fluffy in a quiet back room with her food, bedding, litterbox, and toys, and let her spend the day catching up on her beauty rest. We recommend putting your furball in her quarters before your company arrives. You definitely don’t want to take a chance on your pet getting frightened and bolting out an open door!

Food

It’s purrfectly fine to give your feline friend a special treat. Feel free to share some of that delicious turkey with Fluffy. Just make sure to only give your pet cooked, plain poultry, without the bones, fat, or skin. You can also offer your kitty some plain tuna in water, or cooked fish or meat. Just be sure never to give your furball garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; chocolate; caffeine; dairy products; raw meat, dough, or yeast; or anything containing xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.

Decorations

Keep your pet’s safety in mind when choosing and hanging decorations. Candles, potpourri burners, and heaters are all very dangerous to kitties! Many types of flowers are also toxic to cats, so place your bouquets out of paws’ reach. You’ll also want to be careful with anything that has small parts or dangling threads Fluffy may try to eat.
