Learn the Basics of Kitten Vaccinations

Since August is Immunization Awareness Month, it’s time to consider what our kittens need to be in the best possible health. Below, a Reynoldsburg vet discusses the basics of kitten vaccinations.

How Do Vaccinations Work?

Vaccinations for any animal work by introducing something called an antigen to the immune system. The antigen looks like a disease to your cat’s immune system, and the system prepares to defend itself and fight the disease off. By stimulating the immune system in this manner, your cat’s body is ready to defeat the disease should the real thing ever come along.

What Are the Core Vaccines that Kittens Need?

Core vaccines are considered essential for every kitten. They usually come in a batch that includes the panleukopenia, calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, and rabies vaccinations. Other vaccines may be included in your cat’s core vaccination group, so ask your vet for the details on what your kitten might receive.

What About Non-Core Vaccines?

Non-core vaccines, as the name suggests, aren’t considered necessary for every cat, but they may benefit your particular pet based on health, age, environment, exposure risk, and other factors. Some common non-core vaccinations include the feline leukemia, immunodeficiency virus, and Bordetella vaccinations. Your vet will be able to tell you what other vaccinations your kitten might benefit from.

When Do These Need Updated?

A kitten’s early vaccination sessions wrap up at about 16 weeks of age. After that, she’ll, be on the adult re-vaccination schedule. Many vaccines need yearly updates, usually given at a cat’s yearly physical. Some only need updated every three years, like the rabies vaccine. It’s best to consult your vet to get exact numbers and times.
