Dog Vaccinations FAQs

If you’ve recently adopted a pup, you may have questions concerning dog vaccinations and overall veterinary care. These FAQs compiled by Hillview Veterinary Clinic/Bed & Biscuit can provide the answers you need to ensure your pet remains happy and healthy.

Is It Necessary to Vaccinate My Dog?

Yes! Vaccinations protect your pooch against contagious diseases that can impair his health. Many of these diseases can be fatal if left untreated. Vaccines activate your pup’s immune system to fight off these diseases when exposed. Some vaccines minimize the disease’s symptoms, while others protect your pet from getting the disease altogether.

What Vaccines Should I Give My Dog?

Dog vaccinations can be divided into two categories: core and non-core. Our Reynoldsburg veterinarian recommends all dogs receive core vaccines against serious diseases like distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, and rabies, the latter of which is required by law.

Non-core vaccines can be given according to your pet’s lifestyle and the risk of exposure to certain diseases. If your dog attends a pet daycare or is boarded frequently, we recommend having your pet vaccinated against kennel cough. Our Reynoldsburg veterinarian can help you determine the vaccines best suited for your pup according to your location and lifestyle.

When Should I Vaccinate My Dog?

Puppies need a series of vaccines after being weaned as they’re no longer protected by their mother’s milk. The series can start when your puppy is around 6 to 8 weeks of age and continue every 3-4 weeks until he reaches 16 weeks of age. Vaccines are most effective when administered early in the pet’s life, so we recommend taking care of them as soon as possible. Our veterinarian will create a vaccination schedule based on your pet’s age, breed, and health. Boosters will be administered annually or every one to three years depending on what is best for your pet.
