DIY Holiday Gifts for Cats
Will you be traveling this holiday season? The holidays are a great time to catch up with friends and family members. Fido is part of the family too, so it’s no surprise that many pet parents bring their canine pals with them when traveling. If you’re planning to take your pet with you on vacation, read this article from a local Pickerington, OH veterinarian on traveling with dogs.
Be sure that your canine buddy is current on all vaccinations. Keep copies of his paperwork with you at all times. If you have a smartphone, we recommend taking pictures of his records as well.
Proper ID is very important! Fido should be microchipped, and wearing current ID tags. Remember to keep your contact information current in the microchip manufacturer’s database.
Before leaving, confirm Fido’s sleeping arrangements. You don’t want to find out at the last minute that your canine buddy isn’t welcome!
Fido may love sticking his head out car windows, but he’s much safer traveling in a crate. If your pooch hasn’t been crate trained yet, start working with him right away. You’ll want to make your pet think of his crate as a comfy, cozy den, so start by giving him treats and toys around it.
If you’re traveling by air, your dog may very well have to be crated. Check regulations, and ask your vet for more information on flying with your pet.
Does your pooch get carsick? Try to get him accustomed to being in the car by taking him on several short rides. Make sure to keep the windows cracked, so your pet always has fresh air flowing to him. Also, don’t overfeed your pup before leaving: give him small portions. Remember to stop regularly to let your furry pal stretch his legs.
Packing For Fido
We recommend packing a separate bag for your canine pal. Include Fido’s bedding, toys, and treats, as well as several days’ worth of food. You’ll also want to add a brush, extra collar and leash, and dishes. It isn’t a bad idea to bring along several gallons of the water your pooch usually drinks, as strange water can upset that cute furry belly.
