Fido’s Thanksgiving Plans

Thanksgiving is approaching fast! As you prepare for the autumn holiday, your canine buddy will likely be right there with you. Fido will definitely be paying close attention when those delicious seasonal dishes start coming out of the oven. In fact, your furry friend may have some Turkey Day plans of his own! Below, a Pickerington, OH vet talks about Fido’s Thanksgiving plans.

Walk

Take your canine friend for a nice long walk before your guests arrive. This will help him burn off any excess energy. If you have an energetic pooch, indulge him with a fun play session. If Fido is a little tired, he’ll be calmer and better behaved.

Greet People

If Fido tends to greet people by jumping on them, put him in his crate when people start arriving. You can also put your pup in a quiet back room with food, treats, and toys. Use a baby gate, so your furry buddy can still see and hear you.

Beg

Begging is adorable, but it is bad petiquette, and it can make people uncomfortable. Feed Fido before you eat, so he won’t be hungry. You may also want to keep your canine pal in a separate area during dinner.

Treats

It’s fine to offer your dog a special meal. Just be sure to only give Fido things that are safe for him. Cooked, unseasoned poultry, fish, or meat is fine, as long as the bones, skin, and fat are removed. Cooked, plain potatoes; green beans; peas; carrots; or eggs are also safe. Never give your dog garlic, onions, or chives; grapes, currants, or raisins; chocolate; meat on the bone; nuts; raw dough or meat; hard candy; alcohol; pitted fruits; or products that contain xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.

Trash

Fido may think it’s a brilliant idea to dig through the trash, looking for yummy leftovers. However, the garbage could contain items that are dangerous to dogs, such as toothpicks, food wrappers, tin foil, and can lids. Use a trashcan with a secure lid.

Cuddles

At the end of the day, Fido may want nothing more than to spend some quiet time with you. Offer him lots of belly rubs, and maybe one more special snack. After all, dogs are definitely something to be thankful for!
