5 Things to Teach Your Dog in 2016
posted: May 22, 2018.
Are you starting the new year out with a canine pal? Today is traditionally a great time for people to set new personal goals for themselves. Why not incorporate Fido into your resolutions? One great way to do that is to set new milestone for your dog’s learning. In this article, a local Pickerington, OH vet offers a few suggestions on things you can teach your canine pal in the coming year.
Basic Doggy Commands
All dogs should know at least the five basic commands, which are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. These are very important, not just for good doggy manners, but for safety purposes as well! If Fido doesn’t have these down yet, teach him one at a time.
Does your pooch often lunge at squirrels, cats, or other dogs while you’re walking him? Do you sometimes feel that Fido is walking you, rather than the other way around? Carve out some time to show your furry buddy some leash manners. Tip: To teach your dog not to jerk on the leash, reverse direction every time he tries to pull. He’ll eventually get tired of constantly turning around, and take the hint.
Crate training can be very beneficial. Fido may need to be crated for travel, or when being boarded, visiting the vet or groomer. This will of course be much easier on your canine pal if he is already trained, and sees his crate as a safe, cozy den. It’s very important to understand the do’s and don’ts of using a crate. You never want to confine your dog as punishment, or for long periods of time. Ask your vet for more advice.
At Least One Cute Trick
Why not incorporate a little fun into your furry pal’s educational curriculum? You can teach Fido adorable classic tricks like Sing, Beg, Shake Paw, Play Dead, or Roll Over. These will never, ever, stop being cute! Or, look for some more unusual but hilarious tricks. Gimme Five is always a fun one!
