Spring Cleaning Tips for Dog Owners

As the weather warms up and the snow melts, many people roll up their sleeves for some spring cleaning. Spring is also a great time to clean and organize your dog’s things! In this article, a Pickerington veterinarian offers some spring cleaning tips for dog owners.

Pet Pantry

Have you ever considered getting or making a pet pantry? You can get a standalone cabinet, or repurpose an old dresser or armoire. This is a great option for storing Fido’s food, medicine, treats, toys, clothes, and first aid kit!

First Aid

Speaking of first aid kits, does your pooch have one? If not, this is a great time to make one. Fido’s first aid kit should contain basic medical supplies, such as gauze, antiseptic spray, and nonstick bandages, as well as a leash and muzzle. Include copies of your pup’s medical history and vaccinations in sealed plastic bags. You’ll also want to add pet first aid brochures and important phone numbers, such as the ASPCA’s Poison Control hotline number, which is (888) 426-4435.

Bedding and Toys

Make sure to wash your canine buddy’s bedding, blankets, and toys. Use hot water to wash bedding, clothes, and stuffed animals, and dry them on high heat for at least 30 minutes to kill bacteria and flea eggs. Things that cannot be washed can be placed in sealed plastic bags and put in the freezer for a few day. Check Fido’s leash and collar for wear and tear, and replace if needed.

Dishes

Fido’s dishes should be washed regularly, but you’ll want to be sure to give them a thorough cleaning as part of your springtime chores. If you feed your pooch kibble, consider using a plastic bin for easy storage.

Food, Treats, and Medicine

Check expiration dates on all of your dog’s perishable goods. This includes medicine, flea control products, treats, and food. Toss out anything that’s expired.

Don’t Forget To Clean The Dog

Last but not least, make sure Fido gets a really good bath as the weather warms up. It doesn’t matter if you bathe your canine pal yourself, or take him to a groomer. Remember to trim his toenails while you’re at it!

Spring is also a great time to bring Fido to the vet for a checkup and, if needed, vaccinations! Contact us, your local Pickerington veterinary clinic, for all your pet care needs.
