    Adopting a Shelter Cat

Did you know that June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month? What a great cause to spotlight! While kitties in shelters always need help and attention, this is a wonderful time to talk about them. A Reynoldsburg, OH veterinarian discusses adopting shelter cats in this article.

    Why Adopt A Shelter Kitty

While there is no shortage of cats that need good homes, kitties in shelters often face grim odds, and many of these sweet furballs are quickly running out of time. When you adopt from a shelter, you’ll not just be saving your new pet: you’ll also be helping other animals. Your cat’s adoption fees will help the shelter provide food, shelter, and veterinary care for their furry wards. Plus, the spot Fluffy vacates will soon be filled by another homeless furball.

    Choosing Your Cat

With so many adorable furry faces to choose from, it can be difficult to pick out the perfect pet. Spend some time with Fluffy before you make a final decision. Adopting a kitty is a long-term commitment, so you want to be absolutely sure you’re choosing the cat that is right for you and your household.

    Bringing Fluffy Home

Before you pick up your new kitty, you’ll want to go shopping, and get all the necessary supplies. Fluffy will need food, toys, a litterbox and litter, and a comfy bed. Some cat furniture, like a pet tower or tent, is also recommended. When you first bring your feline friend home, put her in that room, so she has a safe, comfy place to adjust to her new domain.

    Helping Your Kitty Adjust

It may take time for your kitty to feel safe and comfortable in her new environment. Don’t force attention on Fluffy. Let her come to you when she is ready. (Tip: offering your new cat lots of toys and treats might speed up the bonding process a bit.)

    Providing A Safe Haven

It doesn’t take much to turn your home into a luxury mansion for a cat. First and foremost, offer your pet good food, fresh water, and a clean litterbox. You’ll also want to provide her with lots of fun toys and soft beds, and at least one good window view. It may not take long at all to activate Fluffy’s purr!
