Tips for Building a Doggy Playground

Does your pooch have a section of yard all to himself? Fido is part of the family, and will be much happier living indoors, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love spending time outdoors. If you have the time and space, you can incorporate a doggy playground into your yard. In this article, a Pickerington, OH vet offers tips on building a doggy playground.

    Obstacle Course

Did you know that the tires for large trucks and vans make great doggy tunnels? You may be able to find used ones very cheap. Bury them just deep enough so that they will stand upright. To make them a bit prettier, paint them in fun colors! Ramps are also fun for our canine buddies. You can use pallets or plywood to make doggy ramps.

    Water

Does your pooch love water? Consider making Fido a little pool area. Kiddie pools make great swimming areas for dogs. You can often find inexpensive ones at discount stores. Your pup may also enjoy playing in a sprinkler!

    Sandbox

Is Fido a digger? If so, why not make him a sandbox? You can bury toys and treats in it, and let your four-legged buddy have at it. This is also a great way to keep your furry pal from ‘mining’ your yard!

    Fun Extras

Don’t forget to add lots of toys! Balls and rope toys are classic doggy toys. You can also get your canine buddy an automated ball launcher. Change out Fido’s toys frequently to keep things interesting.

    Ground Cover

We know, our canine buddies don’t always make the best gardeners. If Fido’s urine has created dead patches in your yard, consider getting fake grass for his part of the yard. It’s durable, safe, and easy to clean. Avoid mulch, as it can give your furry pal splinters, and can also make him very sick if he eats it.

    Doghouse

Fido’s fun zone won’t be complete without a doghouse. There are countless options for doghouses you can buy or build for your furry friend. If you really want to spoil your pooch, consider making your pal a two-story home, or give him multiple rooms. Hint: wood is really the best insulator when it comes to doghouses.
